Class 701 is a fleet of 90 for South Western Railway's metro and inner suburban lines around London.
In total there will be 90 units split into 701/0 and 701/5 for 10-car and 5-car variants.
The first passenger service for a Class 701 unit took place on Tuesday 9th January 2023 with a single return trip from London Waterloo to Windsor and Eton Riverside, operated by 701037, departing at 10:25 as 2U91 and returning to London as 2U92.
2U91 and 2U92 were repeated on Wednesday 10th with 039, on Thursday with 037 and on Friday with 039.

The line between Staines and Windsor was closed on Monday 15th January so there were no 701s operating on this date. A second round trip was added on Tuesday 16th January, with 2U93 1253 London Waterloo to Windsor & Eton Riverside and 2U94 1400 Windsor & Eton Riverside to London Waterloo. These were operated by 701043.
