The return journey of the Portsmouth Harbour Statesman was less smooth with a damaged third rail between Portsmouth and Southsea and Portsmouth Harbour, the ECS from Fratton Sidings couldn't get the Portsmouth Harbour. Therefore the return to Chesterfield started an hour late from Portsmouth and Southsea station. This meant that it passed Egham approximately an hour late after sunset.
